Mary Helen ‘Nellie’ Smith Mattingly, 95, Hodgenville

Mary Helen “Nellie” Smith Mattingly, 95, of Sunrise Manor Nursing Home in Hodgenville, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.

She was born Aug. 20, 1916, in Springfield. She was a former homemaker and employee of Makers Mark Distillery.  She was an avid quilter and member of St. Rose Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Abigail Carrico Smith; her husband Charles H. Mattingly; seven brothers, Gilbert, Tommy, Bernard, Roscoe, infant Richard Matthew, Robert and Ivo Smith; three sisters, Vinie Hamilton, Mary Theresa Miles and Belle Bartley; and one great-grandson, Daniel James Fleming.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie (Dan) Thompson of Hodgenville; one brother, Louis Smith of Springfield; one sister, Retha Vize of Louisville; three grandchildren, Dana (David) Fleming, Jennifer Tennyson and Matthew Thompson; seven great-grandchildren, Brett, Bridget, Ethan and Eli Fleming, Abigail and Samuel Williamson and Rachel Thompson; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fredericktown.  The Rev. Kevin A. McGrath, O.P. will be the celebrant.  Interment will follow in St. Rose Cemetery.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Monday at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Monday.

Pallbearers will be Larry Hamilton, Bobby Smith, Dougie Smith, Leon Smith, Matthew Thompson and William R. Smith.

Memorial Donations may go toward burial expenses.
