Pit bull being held after pet killed, owner injured in Tuesday attack

Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 7 p.m. — The pit bull terrier that attacked a Barsdtown woman and her dog Tuesday about 4:30 p.m. while walking down a Bardstown alley is being held for evaluation by the Nelson County Humane Society. Denise Oliver of Bardstown was walking her small dog down the alley behind 212 West Flaget when a pit bull terrier, owned by Cynthia Burkhead, broke loose from its chain and attacked. The pit bull attacked Oliver’s dog before attacking Oliver, according to a police department press release. The dog was treated by a veterinarian after the attack but did not survive. Oliver was taken to Flaget Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Police say Burkhead has not been charged, and the investigation is continuing.
