Monday, May 17, 2010, 2:30 p.m. -- Nelson County voters who missed voting in last December’s special election will face new voting machines in Tuesday’s primary election.

Nelson Fiscal Court approved the purchase last summer of new paper ballot electronic scanning voting machines. The new eScan voting machines use a paper ballot. Once the ballot is marked by the voter, the ballot is inserted into an electronic scanner. The eScan machine records the vote electronically and physically; it stores the recorded paper ballots in a lower compartment. The ballots provide a paper trail that can be used to verify the electronic tally from the machine in the county’s voting precincts.

The county will continue to use some of the eSlate touchscreen voting machines to insure poll access to disabled voters. Both the eSlate and eScan voting machines are manufactured by Hart InterCivic of Austin, Texas.

Using the machine is simple. After the voter marks his or her ballot, it is inserted into the scanner, which pulls it inside and scans it. The scanner reads the ballot regardless of it being inserted face-up or face-down.
