Tuesday, April 20, 2010, 2 p.m. -- Something that's been discussed by some of the 12 Democratic candidates vying for their party's nomination for Nelson County Clerk is making more technology available to residents of Nelson County. In a phone interview earlier today, Margaret Neel, a candidate for clerk who currently works in the county clerk's office, said the option to renew auto registration online is already a service that's available to all Kentucky residents.
The Nelson County Clerk's office does not have a web site that is link from the state's motor vehicle licensing system. The link to renew your car or truck plates online is: http://mvl.ky.gov/MVLWeb/.
There are some criteria that must be met to renew online. These include:
- The vehicle must be currently insured with a company that is registered with the Kentucky office of insurance to be eligible to renew online;
- If you have obtained insurance within the last 45 days your information may not be in state's database. This would prohibit you from renewing your vehicle online. If that is the case, you will need to visit the county clerk's office and provide proof of insurance to renew;
- The vehicle(s) renewed must have unexpired registration(s);
- The owner of the vehicle(s) cannot have overdue property taxes on any other vehicles;
.
- The address on the registration renewal notice must be your current address. (Registration materials will be mailed to this address.) If your current address does not match your registration renewal notice please contact the county clerk's office.
- Leased vehicles cannot be renewed online.
A convenience fee of $5 is charged for each vehicle registration this is renewed online.
OTHER SERVICES. The Motor Vehicle Licensing System web site site (http://mvl.ky.gov/MVLWeb/) also allows visitors to examine the many different varieties of license plates that are available, and visitors can also check to see what options are available to personalize their desired license plate and the fees associated with that plate.
The site also has a complete listing of forms that are needed in the transfer of vehicles, including applications for personalized and other types of license plates, and contact information for every county clerk's office in the state.
