Sheriff's Office investigating break-in at Nelson County High School

By JIM BROOKS
Nelson County Gazette

Wednesday, May 28, 2008, 2:31 a.m. -- Police are investigating an early morning break-in at Nelson County High School that took place overnight by what appears to have been a large group of teen-agers

Just after midnight this morning, Nelson County Dispatch reported a silent alarm active at Nelson County High School and dispatched a Nelson County deputy sheriff to the school.

When the deputy arrived, he saw a group of six to eight teen-agers run out of the shop room door, some wearing ski masks. The teens scattered across the lot and were believed to have run behind the school in the direction of the school football field.

Principal Sarah Wilson and police reviewed security camera video that confirmed at least six teens were involved in the break-in.

No damage was initially observed, though Wilson and police were continuing their search and police collected additional evidence inside the school relating to the break-in.

Three cars found partly hidden among school buses at the school were noted by responding officers. The hoods on the three cars were still warm, and police believed they were driven by the break-in suspects.

One of the cars was registered to a male owner in Bloomfield, while the others were registered to male subjects with addresses in Taylorsville and Loretto Road in Bardstown.

At about 1:40 a.m., police were waiting for tow trucks to arrive to impound the three vehicles when three of the subjects involved in the break-in approached an officer.

The three teens were determined to be juveniles. They were held at the scene while the NCHS principal Sarah Wilson was called back to the school. After about 20 minutes of discussion, the three juveniles were taken to the Nelson County Sheriff's Office.

As of presstime, the remaining subjects were still at large.
