Four injured when tornadic storm destroys mobile home

By JIM BROOKS
Nelson County Gazette

Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, 2:30 a.m. -- Four people were injured overnight after their mobile home was destroyed by what officials believe may have been a tornado. The storms that raced through Nelson County damaged numerous buildings, downed trees and power lines across the area.

A mobile home in the 700 block of Double Springs Road was demolished by the high winds. The home's four occupants were injured; three were transported to Flaget by private vehicle, a fourth was transported by Nelson County EMS. The extent of the injuries was unknown at press time.

Firefighters responding to the demolished mobile home found additional storm damage nearby at the offices of Hidden Hollow Construction Co.

Firefighters reported that the construction company's large shop building had its roof blown off and the building collapsed, firefighters at the scene reported. Judging from the damage, firefighters on the scene told officials that it appeared a tornado may have touched down at the site.

Personnel from the National Weather Service office in Louisville will examine the scene to determine if the damage was caused by a tornado.

The winds blew numerous trees down throughout the area. In the Bloomfield area, several trees blocked Tunnel Mill Road and the US62/55 "y" in the Bloomfield area. A deputy sheriff reported his lights hung up on a low hanging telephone line as he passed near Chaparral estates. State and county road crews were busy removing trees and debris from road across the county.

In addition to high winds, there were numerous reports of marble-sized hail. Louisville meteorologists' radar showed numerous disturbances and rotating columns of air all along the squall line. Tornadoes were possible at any point along the line of storms.

The National Weather Service issued a rare multi-county tornado warning at 12:28 a.m. for eastern Hardin, southeastern Jefferson, western Spencer and all of LaRue and Nelson counties. Measured wind speeds topped 80 miles per hour here in Nelson County.

Fatalities, damage reported statewide

Hard-hit Hardin County reported that at least two mobile homes were destroyed, and the roof at Central Hardin High School was extensively damaged.

Hardin County EMS requested mutual aid from Nelson County EMS, which responded with medical personnel and the HazMat Five mobile triage unit.

Three residents of a Muhlenberg County mobile home park were killed when a tornado swept through their homes. The three were residents of Nolen Trailer Park near Greenville. Central City also reported heavy damage. Central City and the county have declared emergencies and requested help from the Kentucky National Guard.

Heavy damage was also reported in Brandenburg, where city officials were asking gawkers to avoid coming to town.
