Rumor Control: Furniture Liquidators store to open in old Winn-Dixie location

By JIM BROOKS
Nelson County Gazette

Wednesday, March 7, 2007, 11 a.m. -- Louisville-based Fuirniture Liquidators -- and not Big Lots -- will open a retail store in the former Winn-Dixie location in the Kentucky Home Square shopping center at the corner of KY 245 and US31E.

The chain is marking its 40th anniversary this year, and has four stores in the Louisville Metro area, three in Southern Indiana and one each in Radcliff, Elizabethtown, Campbellsville and Frankfort.

For more than a year rumors have been advancing the fact that a Big Lots retail store would open in the old Winn-Dixie space. The Gazette's sources confirmed that the furniture store -- not Big Lots -- will move there later this year.

Sources also say that Big Lots is still interested in a location in the area.

REACTION. Callers to the Tuesday, March 6th "Brooks & Ken Show" questioned the need for yet another furniture store on the KY245 Bypass. Apparently the economic conditions were attractive enough for the retail chain to consider a Bardstown location.

While not directly related to the same rumor, the Gazette's sources report that the Corvin's Furniture and Carpet property is listed for sale on the Internet. The listing includes all of the buildings and the large tract where the business is located. Judging from the fact that the Corvin family has been in business for more than 20 years (starting in Hardin County) and is no stranger to competition with other retail carpet and furniture stores, the possible sale of the property is probably not in any way related to the possible move here by Furniture Liquidators.
